Page 109 Remembering the fragments of stories. Why was it important for the children to remember fragments of ‘Great Expectations’. What purpose did it serve at the funeral? P.123 (bottom)
It was so importand for the children becuase they needed another place to rest and giving them quotes and making them remember was like a life story for them because it would help them all the way through life E.G at the funeral when Matilda’s mum offered a prayer to Mr.Watts and she remembered the whole thing off by heart. ~Jai Lambrou
In life we will experience both things good, and bad but all experiences pass. Sometimes all we have to remember the past is memories and stories of people and experiences. At the funeral, everyone had there own individual memory of grace, that memory defined her in the eyes of the person, some important charateristic was shown in each memory. The kids are doing the same with great expectations. The book has created a memory in their heads and now it is a permanent escape for them, all they have to do is close their eyes and remember
i think it was important for all the kids another world to escape to, because of all the war and other stuff that was going on which they didnt like. They needed a lace of escape. During the funeral of Grace, Dolores offered a prayer and she remembered it off by heart.
remembering fragments of the story was important because they needed an escape, a place to go, so they could get away from the sadness around them. i’m not completely sure what purpose it served at the funeral
Remembering fragments of the story served to replace what had been lost in the fire caused by the red skins. The children felt empty without Great Expectations and Mr Watts wanted to recreate the book by combining fragments of stories. The same happened at Grace’s funeral when all the adults gave Mister Watts fragments of Grace’s childhood. It was a process of filling in the pieces that have been lost and both situations relate to each other
The book Great Expectations has played one the largest roles in Matilda’s life. The book offered an escape, a sanctuary from the war ridden town of Bougainville. Remembering even just small fragments of the book could allow Matilda to run off into this escape in her mind and not have to worry about what is happening where she really is. At Grace’s funeral, fragments of Grace’s childhood were mentioned and this allowed Mister Watts to escape in his mind, where he could visit Grace one last time.
